The Catholic Belief in the Eucharist

In this episode of the Catholic Frequency Podcast, we take a brief look into the heart of Catholic faith: the Eucharist. Far more than just bread, it’s Jesus Christ himself, instituted at the Last Supper with the words, “This is my body.” Not a symbol, but a reality.

Episode Transcript

For Catholics, the Eucharist isn't just bread. It's Jesus Christ himself. It all starts at the Last Supper when Jesus took bread and said, this is my body. It's not a symbol. It's a reality.

Do this in memory of me. The Eucharist is the real presence. In the gospel of John, chapter six, we read the words of Christ, unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life in you. The words of Christ here in the bread of life discourse were scandalous then. They're transformative now.

He's truly there. Now as the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, the accidents or the appearance, how they look, remain. But the substance, Christ. It truly is a miracle at every single mass. The Eucharist represents Calvary.

It's not a new sacrifice. It's the sacrifice made present. As doctor Peter Kreeft says, the Eucharist is a time machine. Behold the lamb of God. Receiving Christ in the Eucharist unites us to him and to each other.

One body, one bread. It's intimacy with God himself. Outside of mass, Jesus waits for us in the Eucharist, in the tabernacle. We can go spend quiet time with the king through adoration. Remember the words he gave us in Matthew, come to me.

I will give you rest. The Eucharist is food for the soul, strength for the weary, and healing for the broken. John six fifty five, my flesh is true food. The Catechism describes the Eucharist as the source and summit of our faith. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the church, namely Christ himself.

Whoever eats this bread will live forever.
